GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (WBAY) – The past year has created challenges for the nation’s blood supply. When the pandemic first hit, businesses moved away, schools went virtual and a number of blood drives were canceled.
But the need for blood donation has never ceased.
“The American Red Cross really hasn’t taken a break. We have been actively involved 24/7 throughout the pandemic – whether it was disasters, house fires, blood drives, recovery plasma collection, or even testing. ‘antibodies – we’ve been very busy. But we couldn’t have done anything without the generosity of our volunteers, ”said Laura McGuire, regional communications manager for the American Red Cross.
When it comes to blood drives, Juliana Jarchow, public relations and community engagement specialist for the Community Blood Center in Appleton, says they still feel the challenges today.
“Our main goal every day is to make sure we have a stable blood supply for the patients who need it,” Jarchow explained.
Local trainings are taking place in the region right now with dozens more scheduled for April.
Donations of all blood groups are encouraged, especially type O. Hospitals should have type O blood on hand, as it can be donated to anyone.
Officials from the American Red Cross and Community Blood Center say people who have received the COVID-19 vaccine can still donate.
McGuire said: “If you’ve been vaccinated you can donate blood.”
“Those who have received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine are eligible to donate,” Jarchow added.
The American Red Cross and the Community Blood Center continue to encourage community members to donate blood if they can.
“The need for blood never goes away. Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood, and really all the blood types are needed, ”Jarchow said.
