British choirs and holiday concert traditions at the Opera Theater continue with 2020 Twist

LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 10, 2020) – The Singletary Center for the Arts may be closed to the public, but its halls have been anything but empty this semester. This holiday season, the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky (CFA) will be releasing two online vocal music concerts that celebrate the sounds of the season. While families and the public may not come together in the usual sense, these UK’s School of Music holiday traditions aim to bring the university and community to central Kentucky virtually from the safety of their homes.

The UK School of Music’s annual “Collage: A Holiday Spectacular” is a Lexington holiday tradition that will be altered, but not interrupted, for 2020. A virtual version of the beloved concert will be posted on the College of Fine Arts page Vimeo Saturday, December 12, as part of the CFA Class Concert Series. This year’s’ Collage ‘will feature new and archival footage of the seven UK choir ensembles as well as College of Fine Arts instrumental groups performing holiday favorites including’ Let it Snow ‘,’ Joy to the World And “Carol of the Cloches.” Click here to watch “Collage.”

One of the most popular events of the year at the Singletary Center for the Arts, “Collage” typically fills the auditorium for all three performances, but due to health and safety concerns related to the pandemic, performances of This year’s “Collage” was recorded in front of an empty room with all of the artists masked and socially distanced.

The UK Opera Theater will present its own virtual holiday concert, which will be released on December 19, with performances by students and vocal teachers, including “What Child is This?” “Joy to the world” and “White Christmas”. Like the ‘Collage’ recording, the UK Opera Theater performances were recorded in front of an empty hall with masked and socially distanced performers.

“It has been an exceptional achievement to be able to get the students to rehearse and play safely this semester,” said Matthew Gibson, Singletary Center director of operations. “I am so grateful for our ability to pivot under these difficult circumstances and provide the community with this lovely holiday concert. I think all of us at the College of Fine Arts recognize the value of allowing our students to perform. , and through their rehearsals and performances, to create meaningful bonds forged by making music together. ”

The UK Choirs Virtual Collage Edition and UK Opera Theater Holiday Concert are free and will remain online during the holidays. The CFA Vimeo page is also home to a host of concerts recorded during the fall semester 2020, also free.

The UK School of Music at the UK College of Fine Arts has achieved national recognition for high-level education in opera, choral and instrumental music, as well as music education, music therapy, composition, theory and the history of music.
