Record number of abortions recorded in England and Wales in 2020

LONDON, England – A record number of abortions took place in England and Wales in 2020, new statistics show.

the The figures, published on June 10, showed that there were 210,860 abortions last year, the highest number since the introduction of the 1967 abortion law.

A pro-life group said that figure – an increase of 1,341 from the previous pic in 2019 – marked a “devastating increase” in abortions after the government allowed women in England to perform medical abortions at home during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The government held a consultation on whether to establish the new rules permanent.

Michael Robinson of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) noted: “This year’s figures show a devastating increase in the number of abortions. Statistics reveal a catastrophic loss of unborn lives resulting from the government’s dangerous abortion policy.

Statistics, released by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, showed that 3,083 abortions took place in 2020 due to disability.

Right to Life UK association noted that 693 of those abortions were due to Down syndrome, an increase from 656 in 2019.

He added that there were also 35 abortions based on a cleft lip or cleft palate in 2020. Both conditions can be corrected with surgery.

The association also said 65 “selective shutdown” procedures have taken place, in which doctors abort an unborn child carried by a mother who is expecting multiple babies.

Right to Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said: “It is a national tragedy that 210,860 lives were lost to abortion in England and Wales last year. Each of these abortions represents a failure of our society to protect the lives of babies in the womb and a failure to offer full support to women with unplanned pregnancies.

“Last year we came together as a nation and made great sacrifices to protect vulnerable people from COVID-19. Sadly, while protecting a vulnerable group of people, we as a society have also ended the lives of thousands of vulnerable young people through abortion. “
